General Information
Kangaroo Island, one of the most unique, unspoilt wildernesses in Australia, is situated only 40 minutes from the mainland.
The key to future growth in the Island's nature-based tourism industry is through sensitive, high-quality development. Rare seal colonies are the main tourist attractions on the Island. Kangaroo Island's 'clean green' environment has provided the impetus for a number of alternative and value-added products, including honey and eucalyptus oil. Commercial fishing is important to the future of Kangaroo Island, with exports of rock lobster and abalone.
Many visitors are keen to sample local seafood, consuming the locally caught whiting and garfish in the Island's hotels and restaurants. Other areas offering development potential include the farming of yabbies, marron, oysters and abalone.
The island's central region has some significant plantations of timber suitable for furniture and housing.
Local food producers have gained a reputation for gourmet products. Specialty cheeses, honeys, jams and preserves, native food or 'bush tucker' and corn-fed free-range poultry are now successfully marketed locally and interstate. These products also have excellent export development potential. The development of enterprise networks for wine, olives, prime lamb, marron, honey and native cut flowers has enabled small businesses to address quality assurance, marketing and enterprise development issues.
A further area of growth is in viticulture with a number of vineyards being established on the Island.
