One of Brisbane's most prestigious suburbs, New Farm is home to more than 8,000 residents
A few kilometres from Brisbane's CBD, this suburb has undergone vast transformation during the past 10 years, which has seen the suburb become one of Brisbane's most prestigious. New Farm is home to more than 8,000 residents and has a wide of community facilities including cafes and restaurants, cinemas and retail complexes.
New Farm is well served by public transport and includes the CityCat ferry service with two terminals, one at New Farm Park and the other at Sydney Street. This ferry service, introduced by the Brisbane City Council in late 1996, has proved enormously beneficial for local residents and makes New Farm only 5 minutes commuting distance from the Brisbane's Riverside Centre.
Other recent initiatives by the Brisbane City Council in New Farm include the conversion of the historic New Farm powerhouse into a community complex incorporating theatres and art spaces.
The New Farm Park has been a popular Sunday afternoon destination for inner Brisbane residents for many generation and Moray Street has been awarded Brisbane's most 'livable' street
The suburb has a wide variety of housing styles ranging from historic older worker's cottages and colonials located between Brunswick and James streets through to art deco blocks of flats and modern apartments located beside the Brisbane River with spectacular city views.
New Farm was one of the first suburbs to be settled in Brisbane after Spring Hill and Petrie Terrace and some of the housing characteristics unique to the areas include the appealing 'bull nose' verandahs.
More recent residential developments in the suburb are much more empathetic to the area and many have been incorporated into recycled industrial buildings and warehouses.
